1. From Medication List in the patient record and click on Add

2. Search for “Insulin,” 

3. click on Insulin Order Set 

4. The Insulin order set will open with Insulin options organised by type (rapid acting, short acting etc) 

The related results section will display the latest Capillary glucose results (last three with option to view more.) When interpreting this please take note the result date and time

5. To prescribe insulin(s) tick in the appropriate order set box(es) and click on OK 

6. Another order set will open for each insulin type selected. These order sets contain multiple lines to facilitate variable dose prescribing 

7. In the order set tick the number of lines required, and complete the dosing instructions for each order detail in the Details pane. Multiple lines will be needed if doses vary between administration times

8. The following are mandatory fields:

a. Dose  

b. Dose unit (pre-populated and limited to unit(s) (except HUMULIN R))

c. Route of Administration (pre-populated and limited to sub-cutaneous)

d. Frequency

e. Start date and time

8. The remaining fields are optional.

The “agreed Insulin dose range field” is to facilitate variable doses and self-administration, use of this must be agreed with patient and nursing staff (Refer to the trusts self-administration policy)

9. Once all necessary fields are completed click on OK and sign 

This will generate an open-ended prescription. It is the responsibility of the patient’s medical staff to review doses on an ongoing basis
